Villa Romana is a centre for the production of contemporary art and international exchange. Only ten minutes from downtown Florence, it combines the tranquillity of a large garden with the reality of a large urban centre.

The Premio Villa Romana (Fellowship) is the oldest German award for artists. Since 1905 it has been awarded each year to artists working in Germany. Its goal is to offer leading artists the opportunity to devote themselves entirely to the evolution of their idiom during a residence in Florence. The winners of the residency receive a scholarship and have the use of a studio and apartment inside the villa. The winners of the Premio Villa Romana are chosen by a specially appointed jury every year. Through exhibitions, meetings with international guests and a wide range of initiatives, Villa Romana continues today to pursue a close dialogue with the artists and the public, in an international artistic setting, and promotes communication with the cultures of the Mediterranean. In Florence, a city full of historic artistic masterpieces, Villa Romana provides a forum for contemporary art open to dialogue with international partners.
